Apple Watch Series 10 Features Ticking Second, But Limited to Select Watch Faces

by Cindy

The Apple Watch Series 10 has introduced a new feature that allows users to view a continuous ticking second, an effect previously unavailable in the always-on display mode. This enhancement, part of the improved screen controls, provides a more traditional wristwatch experience by displaying a second hand that ticks, even when the watch is dimmed.

However, this feature is currently restricted to just four watch faces: “Flux,” “Reflections,” “Activity Digital,” and “Unity Rhythm,” the latter being added as part of Apple’s Black History Month update. While the continuous second effect adds a satisfying touch to the user experience, its limited availability has raised questions among Apple Watch users, especially as many other popular watch faces do not support this feature.

Despite its introduction, the ticking second is not present on many of the default watch faces that users commonly prefer, such as the Modular face, including the version on the Apple Watch Ultra. This omission has left some users wondering about the rationale behind Apple’s selective approach. Given that the feature has already been implemented on certain watch faces, it’s unlikely that battery life concerns are the cause.

Apple has yet to provide an official explanation for the decision, and there are no indications that third-party developers will be allowed to create their own watch faces that incorporate the continuous second. This leaves Apple’s choices regarding the display of seconds in always-on mode somewhat inconsistent, especially since the company emphasized this feature during the Series 10 launch.

Additionally, Apple’s approach to watch faces has been notably unpredictable. Over the years, the company has introduced new faces, removed existing ones, and changed the functionality of some, often without clear justification. These internal decisions have frustrated many users who are invested in the customization and daily use of their Apple Watch faces.
