Apple has recently secured approval to introduce its sleep apnea detection feature for the Apple Watch in Malaysia, according to local resident Xavier Naxa. Although the exact launch date remains unclear, the feature continues to be rolled out internationally, expanding access to this health tool.
This update follows the feature’s introduction in Brazil in December 2024, marking another step in Apple’s global expansion strategy. As of September 2024, sleep apnea notifications were available in over 150 countries and territories, with further availability anticipated.
Sleep apnea, a serious condition where breathing repeatedly halts and resumes during sleep, can pose significant health risks. Apple Watch Series 10, Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models, equipped with an accelerometer, are capable of detecting wrist movements that may indicate breathing disruptions. If consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea are detected, the watch will alert the user.
The feature utilizes advanced machine learning algorithms developed from a comprehensive dataset of clinical sleep apnea tests. It has been validated through a clinical study, ensuring its accuracy. Designed primarily for adults who have not previously been diagnosed with sleep apnea, the feature enables users to monitor their sleep quality.
Users can view a log of nightly breathing irregularities within the Health app on their iPhone. Each disturbance is categorized as either “elevated” or “not elevated,” helping individuals better understand their sleep patterns and seek professional advice if necessary.
