Since receiving the Apple Watch Series 10, I’ve primarily paired it with the sleek Milanese Loop band, a popular choice known for its elegance. However, when Nomad introduced its new Icy Blue glow-in-the-dark Sport Band, I decided to give it a try. While the band certainly draws attention with its glowing feature, it turned out that what I appreciated most about it had less to do with its glow and more with its overall comfort and durability.
A Comfortable and Durable Alternative
Comfort is a crucial factor when selecting a watch band, and I found that Nomad’s Sport Band stands out as a worthy alternative to Apple’s own Sport Band. The fluoroelastomer rubber material feels thick and robust, offering excellent durability. Whether engaging in physical activity or just going about daily tasks, I felt confident that the band would withstand wear and tear without issue.
The design utilizes a metal pin-and-hole system for secure fitting, allowing for a high degree of adjustability. The holes stretch along the length of the band, promoting airflow and preventing discomfort during prolonged wear. Although slightly bulkier than what I typically prefer for overnight wear, it never caused any irritation or discomfort during the day. In fact, it meets my main priority for any watch band: it’s virtually unnoticeable during everyday activities.
A Rugged Look with Unique Appeal
Beyond comfort, Nomad’s Sport Band offers a rugged, distinctive style compared to other options like Apple’s or Casetify’s alternatives. While both of those bands excel in comfort, Nomad’s version feels tougher and more durable, giving it an edgier, more casual aesthetic.
Of course, I opted for the glow-in-the-dark version, and its Icy Blue color proved to be quite appealing. In normal lighting, the band appears off-white with a subtle minty blue hue that’s not overly bold but still eye-catching. The band’s glowing feature adds a sci-fi, Tron-like vibe, and although it’s not overwhelmingly bright, it catches attention in the dark.
The Glow: Fun, But Requires Patience
The glow-in-the-dark feature, while fun, requires a bit of effort to work. The band needs sufficient light exposure to activate its photoluminescence. Living in the U.K. during winter, where sunlight is scarce and my Apple Watch is often hidden beneath layers of clothing, it took some planning to get the band to glow properly. I placed it on a windowsill throughout the day, and by nightfall, the band finally lit up with a soft, even glow.
While the glow is impressive, it doesn’t last long—especially in winter when sunlight is minimal. The glow fades relatively quickly after the light source is removed, but I expect this will improve with more direct sunlight in the warmer months.
Worth the Investment?
Nomad’s Icy Blue glow-in-the-dark Sport Band stands out as a functional and stylish alternative to more traditional watch bands. At $60, it’s a reasonable investment, especially considering its comfort and durability. While the glow is certainly a fun feature, it’s the band’s quality and rugged design that makes it a standout choice for anyone looking for a more casual, versatile band for their Apple Watch.
Currently, some sizes of the Icy Blue band are still available for purchase, though the smaller 41mm/42mm versions have already sold out. However, the 46mm/49mm sizes, which fit larger Apple Watch models, including the Apple Watch Ultra 2, remain in stock. Given Nomad’s track record of limited-edition releases, I recommend purchasing one soon if you’re interested.
As for me, I’m excited to add this band to my regular rotation—though I’ll likely reserve it for the sunnier months when both it and I can bask in the light.
